Autonomy can satisfy the needs of minorities, and satisfied minorities do not cause conflicts
Autonomy can satisfy the needs of minorities, and satisfied minorities do not cause conflicts – this was the conclusion of the debate on the topic of minority rights and conflicts in Europe, organised at the Bálványos Summer University (Tusványos) in Băile Tușnad*Tusnádfürdő, Romania, on Thursday, 24 July 2025.
If minorities are treated as equal partners by the majority, they will become loyal citizens who contribute to the development of the region, the country and society. If, on the other hand, they are treated as second-class citizens, the possibility of conflict remains in the air, explained FUEN President, Member of the European Parliament Vincze Loránt@ at the debate.
The participants agreed that the best solutions for preventing conflicts are forms of autonomy tailored to the needs of minorities. Paul Videsott, scientific director of the Südtiroler Volksgruppen Institute, confirmed this with presenting the findings of his research.
